The changeover to adult food should be gradual; for small breed dogs this is around 9 months, for medium breeds around 12-15 months, while for large breed dogs this is around 15 to 18 months.

The recommending daily rations are a guide to help you as your puppy grows; so, the croquette portion of his diet should be gradually increased each month following the feeding tables. The recommended quantities should be used taking into account how much exercise your puppy gets and the seasons (summer or winter). On this basis, daily feeding portions may be 10-20% higher or lower compared to the recommended quantities. Careful observation by you, the owner, will be essential for establishing the daily ration that is suitable for your puppy.

For a 3-month old puppy weighing 10 Kg, the daily ration would be 300 gr. of Holistic Puppy Large croquettes as the main part of his diet mixed in with around 300-400 gr. of wet food choosing from Almo Nature Puppy chicken, Almo Nature tuna, Jelly Puppy tuna or Biopaté Puppy chicken. This daily ration should be divided into 3 meals served in the morning, halfway through the day and in the evening.

The growth phase in puppies in very delicate, during which bone and muscle are still developing and the immune system is still fragile.Consequently, it is essential to use foods of high quality right from the start, preventing, in this way, the onset of food intolerance. Puppies, after weaning (at 3 months), should be taught very gradually to get used to various foods of different origins and consistencies (dry/wet).

The Holistic Dog Puppy Small, Medium and Large Croquette line is a food formulated using premium quality ingredients, with a very high percentage of fresh meat and limited use of meals and sub-products. In addition, as it contains no chemical additives, this guarantees effective prevention against the onset of food intolerance, offering excellent digestibility and absorption of nutritional elements.

You can feed your puppy just croquettes but Almo Nature recommends mixing in a portion of wet food as a condiment to the dry croquettes right from the start. This will make your puppy’s meals more tasty and appetising, enhancing his physical and mental wellbeing.

It is not advisable to feed your puppy just wet foods as, during this important step in his development, he should be trained to chew his food and he will only learn this via a diet based on dry croquettes. In addition, a meal ration made up of food containing 70% moisture is decidedly high, above all, for medium and large breed dogs. For this reason, wet food should be used as a condiment and not as a main food.

Taking into account that dogs come in all breeds and sizes such as Small (adult weight up to 10 kg), Medium (adult weight from 11 to 25 kg) and Large (adult weight over 26 Kg), the croquette portions during this growth phase will vary and you should increase daily servings gradually according to your puppy’s age and the weight that he will be when adult (you will find this information in the feeding tables on the back of the pack). In addition, you can (and we recommend) feed your puppy meals made up of around 1/3 wet food to 2/3 dry food as described in the answers to the following FAQs.

Dogs because of their vicinity living with us have become omnivores. Having said this, however, meat and fish have a fundamental importance in a dog’s diet, in that once upon a time he was a carnivore and he still needs to vary his protein sources (white and red meat and fish).

According to Almo Nature, your dog’s diet should be made up of a maximum of 1/3 of wet food mixed in with 2/3 of dry.

Wet foods increase the taste-appeal of croquettes. In Almo Nature’s view, for dogs, as for us, eating satisfaction is very important psychologically.

The daily recommended ration of wet food, in weight, is a third of total food served. We would recommend using wet food from the Natural or Cuisine categories, or Taste products if they have been certified as “Organic”. During the summer months, we would advise using Jelly Dog, belonging to the Cuisine category, whose gelatine mixed in with croquettes provides greater moisture to your dog’s meal, making it particularly appetising. For example:

• for a dog weighing 10 kg that is moderately active, feed 120 gr. of Holistic Dog Small croquettes, adding in a 95 gr. tin of wet food.
• for a dog weighing 25 kg that is moderately active, use 250 gr. of Holistic Dog Medium croquettes, mixing in 150 gr. of wet food.
• for a dog weighing 40 kg that is moderately active, serve 420 gr. of Holistic Dog Large Croquettes and one 340 gr. tin of wet food.

Intolerance is a non immune reaction that develops more or less slowly over time and it is generally caused by using poor quality ingredients and chemical additives such as taste enhancers and preservatives.

In most cases this is not a true allergy but rather food intolerance due to the poor quality of the ingredients. Even in the case of an allergy, our chicken oil only contains fats and no chicken proteins and does not risk triggering allergic reactions. Allergies are triggered only by foods that contain certain proteins that characterise that food.

Foods in a daily maintenance diet should not cause or aggravate intolerances. Thanks to the quality of the ingredients we use and the total absence of chemical preservatives, Almo Nature’s lines do not need to include a specific food for intolerances … All our foods can be used!!! Try them when trying to treat symptoms and as a maintenance diet and you’ll really see an improvement!

Our foods in the Holistic Dog line, belonging to the Basic category, all have a limited calorie content, because we have tried to satisfy the energy needs of dogs in an optimum way that, today, often get limited exercise. Depending on your dog’s constitution and body mass, the daily ration may be gradually reduced by 10-20% (compared to the average recommended ration) and, to reduce hunger pangs, use Almo Nature products from the Natural range together with croquettes that are ideal because they have no added fats. For example, for a small breed dog add a 95 gr. tin, for a medium breed, a 150 gr. can and for a large breed, a 340 gr. or 400 gr. can. In this way, weight gain can be checked without your dog knowing it and he will enjoy every morsel of his food!!!

Sterilisation is now very common in dogs and, taking into account that statistically it is associated with today’s sedentary lifestyle, many dogs are overweight. Almo Nature, in producing Holistic Dog, belonging to the Basic category, uses only polyunsaturated oils that are highly digestible and have a limited calorie content to tackle this new situation.

The best way to handle this problem is to reduce the daily food ration which, if reduced gradually by 10-20 % depending on the situation, means that undesirable weight gains can be prevented. As dietary experts advise, don’t do without, just reduce the size of the portions!!

As we have always recommended, and our advice holds even truer when reducing meal rations, add in a wet food which, with its high percentage of moisture and low percentage of fats will take away any hunger pangs.

In this case, you need to increase the ration of Holistic Dog by 10-20% depending on your need. You can increase your dog’s rations by a higher percentage if he undertakes particular muscular exercise requiring stamina and energy.
Feed a maintenance diet of croquettes and always add a wet food from the Almo Nature Dog (Natural) and/or Cuisine Dog (Cuisine) lines.

From the point of view of nutrition, apart from a few very rare exceptions, the differences between breeds is more cultural than scientific! Dogs have been living with us for over 20,000 years and their nutritional needs are simple: varied, tasty and premium quality foods. You don’t always need to use Natural products, but it’s necessary to know the quality level of the foods you are giving your pets and to make sure that you vary their food so they have a balanced diet. The proteins in a chicken breast are “complete” proteins which means that they are easily assimilated and perfectly “balanced”, meaning that no essential amino acids are missing. By contrast, many proteins found in chicken feathers are not easily assimilated – for this reason, if used in foods, they have to undergo processing to increase digestibility – and they are unbalanced, in that a number of essential amino acids are missing; in this specific case, tryptophan and methionine.This is the reason why 1 g of chicken breast protein does not have the same biological and nutritional value of 1 g of chicken feather protein. The analytical values shown on the label, i.e. the quantity of protein as a percentage of the final product does not provide enough information for evaluating the actual protein content of a food. It is important to know the quality and origin of the proteins that a food contains.

According to the law, meat derivatives (also called “sub-products”) are those parts that are not fit for human consumption and include entrails, feathers and bones. These parts may also be used to create meal.

This means those cuts of meat of the same quality to be eaten by humans but that have been sold to pet food manufactures and, by law, cannot be defined as “for human consumption”.
